Train Derailment Investigation

Dear Beaver River Property Owners Association,

We are looking for your group’s help in our investigation into the train derailment that occurred on September 28, 2021 in the hamlet of Beaver River. The Adirondack Railroad was proceeding north with a work train at 12:48PM on 9/28/21 when the locomotive and second car cleared the switch at the southern end of the siding in Beaver River. Moments later the hopper cars behind began to derail and come off the tracks.

Authorities from NYS DOT Investigations Bureau, and railroad inspection program have responded to the scene and analyzed all damage to the rails and the train with no findings of mechanical or human errors. These experts have advised that the only likely explanation is that someone purposely manipulated the switch while the train had partially gone over same. Authorities have also been advised that sometime in the week prior, security padlocks on the switch stands on both ends of the siding had been forcefully removed.

At this time we are asking that you please put this message on your property owners webpage and ask anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the last two weeks or have any information regarding the incident to contact the Town of Webb Police Department at (315)369-3157 or Senior Investigator Teresa Grant of the NYS DOT Investigations Bureau at (518)-457-2411.

Please reference case #SJS-18060. ALL CALLS WILL BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter,
Chief Ronald W. Johnston.
